Implant-supported bridges

For multiple missing teeth, implants can be placed on either side of a gap and a bridge fitted to fill the space. Full arch bridges can also be secured to implants to replace a full arch of teeth.

How do implant-supported bridges work?

Dental implants are made of titanium or zirconia, and once inserted, they replace your missing tooth root. After they're fitted, the bone surrounding the implant will gradually integrate with it, holding the implant firmly in place. A bridge (false teeth) is then fitted to the top of the dental implants. The process of having dental implants usually takes between three to nine months, but this can vary depending on your individual needs and treatment plan.

Benefits of dental implants

  • They're a fixed alternative to removable dentures
  • They look, feel and function almost like natural teeth
  • They will offer you long-term stability and comfort
  • They prevent bone loss and stimulate bone structure
  • They last for many years if you look after your dental health
  • Minimal adjustments are needed to other teeth to secure them
  • They could improve your speech and may allow you to eat the foods you love

The process explained

1. You'll be assessed

Firstly, you will be assessed by one of our dentists – the same dentist who will be performing your treatment. They will discuss all the options with you, so you can make an informed solution that is right for you, and to ensure you understand every step of your treatment plan. You will have an x-ray and, in some cases, a CT scan to help visualise your jaw, ensure your gums are healthy and that there is enough jawbone to place the implant. If teeth need to be extracted, this will be carried out carefully to preserve the bone surrounding them. If there is any sign of infection, the socket will be left to heal for two to six months.

2. Your dental implants will be placed

This is when implants are placed into your jaw – a process which can be completed under local anaesthetic. If you are particularly nervous or have a dental phobia, your dentist will make sure you feel comfortable and can provide sedation if needed. Once dental implants have been placed, they will need approximately two to six months to heal and integrate with your jawbone to provide a solid support for a bridge. Some patients might be able to have a temporary bridge fitted at the same time as when their dental implants are placed.

3. Your dental implants will be exposed

Dental implant exposure is a minor surgical procedure to uncover the implant, to allow the gums to heal around it before the final bridge is attached. The implants will be tested to see if they have integrated, and if so, a small connector called an abutment will be fixed on top of the implant, to which the final bridge can be attached. There will also be a period of healing required for the gum around the implants after this procedure, which can take approximately three weeks.

4. Your final bridge is made and fitted

When your jaw has completely healed, your dentist will take an impression of your mouth. This enables a dental technician to build your bespoke and final bridge, which will be colour-matched to blend seamlessly with your other teeth. This may require two or more appointments, as some cases are more challenging and need to be checked before the final placement. It might also be necessary to have a separate appointment between six weeks and six months after your initial treatment, to make sure your implants have fully integrated with your jaw. This ensures that your jaw has completely healed before the bridge is permanently attached.

My experience with aligners at Portman Smile Clinic was great from start to finish. The treatment was much faster than I expected and the final result is perfect. I barely felt any pain at all, which really surprised me, as the aligners are very gentle and comfortable. The orthodontists were excellent and always made me feel at ease. The nurses were so kind and supportive, and the reception team was always friendly and helpful. You can really tell that the clinic is very well managed and that they care about their patients. I’m really happy with my smile now and I would 100% recommend Portman Smile Clinic to anyone looking for a smooth and positive orthodontic experience.

I had my aligner treatment at Portman Smile Clinic and I honestly couldn’t be happier with the result. The treatment was really quick and my tooth looks absolutely perfect now. I was a bit nervous at the beginning, but it was almost painless — the aligners were very comfortable and easy to get used to. All the orthodontists were amazing, very kind and professional, and they always explained everything clearly, which made me feel relaxed and confident. The whole team was lovely, from the reception staff to the nurses and management. Everyone was friendly, organised and welcoming every time I visited. I’m so happy I chose Portman Smile Clinic and I would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about aligners, especially teenagers like me!
